Sounds like a beautiful trip. Just take the usual precautions you take before visitng a tropical country (such as shots, bring lots of sunscreen… maybe pack a mosquito net… ).

As for where to stay, I’d highly recommend Owner Direct Vacation Rentals. They have a few vacation rentals in Mauritius: http://www.ownerdirect.com/lodging/mauritius/grandbay/mauritius.htm

I haven’t used a hotel in years, since I found out how great it is to stay at a vacation rental instead. So much more relaxing and private. So nice to “come home” at the end of a day of sightseeing, instead of returning to a crowded, noisy hotel…

Hope everything works out well for your honeymoon!

As far as weather is concerned, have a look at the figures here:

Although the Eastern coast have some very attractive places and great golf courses, tourists usually prefer the western coast, particularly North -West (from Pointe aux piments to Cap malheureux), the Flic en Flac area or (South-West) the Morne area .

Mauritius is a safe country. Just not be alone in a city or in the country at night.

Vacation rental may be a good choice in Mauritius like in other countries. However, in Mauritius, the wide range of hotel categories from small and cheap guest houses to expensive top level resorts makes hotel accommodation the very best option in Mauritius for a stay of 7 days.

Hiring a taxi for a day or a few hours is a typical way to get around Mauritius since the driver may give you some suggestions and advice (to some extent, he may act as a guide). This is much better than tours that you may book from your tour operator (it gives you much more freedom). Taxis are waiting for tourists in the morning at the hotels.

Package from your country is a classical option. It usually includes some special advantage for honeymooners. But, as for Mauritius, you may also quite easily organise your trip by yourself (if you want to do so) because Mauritius has good air connections, a very comprehensive hotel network, and extended taxi services.

Pamplemousse garden, Maison Eureka, Casela bird park, Port louis …are some of the places to visit. But, this depends on your own preferences.

take the usual precautions.
i is good if you are going by package trip.
of course it is a safe place but you take precautions.
in July it is already winter here!
Hope to see you, I’m a Mauritian of Curepipe!

Congratulations on your marriage, and on selecting a wonderful honeymoon destination. My husband and I have visited there many times. The entire coastline of this small island (you can get around it in one day) has great hotels. I’ve never heard complaints from any fellow visitors to Mauritius about hotels. The package deal is the best way to go.

So you like a cool climate? I have good news for you, which no one else mentioned so far: July is Winter in Mauritius, as it is in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s quite cool in June, when I’ve been – nice ocean breeze, and you’ll need at least a wooly shawl at night to keep you warm. It will get chilly at night! December is very, very hot. One thing though, remember Winter is flu season everywhere in the world. So get a flu shot.

Mosquitos are around all year, though not many, the hotels keep them under control. You don’t need a net! But you do need a little “OFF” spray or other brand in your checked luggage, if you’re the type that always gets bitten. As a world traveler, I would say that is true for every country! One thing we all have in common is mosquitos. :-) LOL

Tours: actually, the hotel usually has an agent to help with tours, and there are taxis that may be cheaper. I’ve done both and really, they are both good, AS LONG AS you really wanted to go on that trip! So limit your trips out! One day in the South, seeing Casela Park (birds, lemurs, and for a fee private walk with lions), Alexandra Falls and Chamarel (Seven colored earth) and the Shiva Temple (with wild monkeys coming close to people and taking bananas from them!) is fun. In the North, you have Pamplemousse Gardens, with very, very old trees, thousands of years old, and giant Amazon lotuses/waterlilies.

I would not recommend more than those two days out, and don’t let anyone talk you into too much activity. Other than that you’ll be invited on catamaran cruises at the hotel, cruises to swim with dolphins, etc. That’s up to you. It’s your honeymoon! Do what you like.

One tip: every time you’re wondering how much you should pay a taxi or tour, ask at your hotel reception desk, and then bargain with the drivers, etc. You’ll see, if they know YOU KNOW the real cost, they won’t make you pay more. Mauritius is like paradise, and the people are so nice and friendly. Have fun!

It is like going to any country. So take usual precautions dear…
